Dr Tim running at parkrun

Did you know that exercise isn’t just about staying fit—it’s a part of your healthy living plan that your GP uses to help you live a healthier, happier life? Finding time to exercise can feel impossible. The good news? You don’t have to overhaul your entire routine to start seeing the benefits.

In this blog, we’ll answer questions that can help you take small steps (or run) toward better health, as recommended by your local Carina doctors.

The RACGP and Parkrun: A partnership for better health

The RACGP (Royal Australian College of General Practitioners) has partnered with Parkrun Australia to promote the health and well-being of staff and patients.

Whether you walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate, you can learn new skills and boost your health and happiness in the great outdoors. Make new friends, feel a part of your community and improve your wellbeing at parkrun.  Parkrun.com.au

The Carina GPs at The Practice at Clem Jones Centre are all RACGP specialist General Practitioners.

Why Do GPs in Carina Recommend Exercise Like Parkrun?

Regular exercise plays a crucial role in improving both physical and mental health. According to Australia’s Physical Activity and Exercise Guidelines, movement helps:

  • managing chronic conditions –  for example diabetes, heart disease, arthritis
  • reducing stress,
  • increasing energy and
  • boosting mood.

This Australian guideline outlines the amount of activity you should aim for at each part of your life stage.  Of course, these are general guidelines, and if you need a customised exercise plan, you should always speak to your doctor at our Carina GP Practice.

Parkrun is an example of a simple, inclusive activity endorsed by the RACGP and often recommended by our GPs in Carina. Walk, run, volunteer or spectate – starting small is often the first step. Meeting with friends and family, getting outdoors, and being in a community have many health benefits.  When your fitness improves from a gentle walk, you can progress to a jog and then a run.  Parkrun participants show improvements in, among other things, fitness, total physical activity, and mood.

How Can I Start Exercising Safely?

Even if you have health concerns or haven’t exercised in years, it’s never too late to start.

  • Consult your GP for personalised recommendations, begin with low-impact activities, and set realistic goals.
  • Movement of any kind counts, and small steps can lead to significant health benefits.
  • While the name Parkrun has ‘run’ in it, many people walk it.

What Simple Changes Can I Make to Add More Movement Into My Day?

Remember, every step counts.  Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Add a short walk into your daily routine: If you’re heading to the shops in Carina, consider walking or cycling instead of driving.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator
  • Stand up while you work rather than sitting for long periods
  • Try a walking meeting
  • Join a parkrun to meet friends rather than meeting for lunch
  • Use a smart device with reminders. Fitness trackers or apps on your phone, like Apple Watch, can help you stay motivated.
  • Throw or kick a ball with your kids or grandkids (or friends) in a local Carina park or your backyard.

It doesn’t have to be hard at the beginning.  Each time you do a little more, you gain more confidence and skills.  If you need help, you can contact the team at Clem Jones Centre Wellness Centre, your local Carina GP practice.

How Can I Stay Consistent with Exercise?

It can be hard to overcome barriers like a lack of time or motivation. Once started, though, it does become easier.

Bringing the whole family to Parkrun on Saturday morning in Carina, can be a great activity for everyone.

Strategies like finding a workout buddy and setting achievable goals can be helpful.
